When you go on a mission they give you a nametag. cool, i know.
for 19 months i wore that name tag.
it took awhile to get used to. putting it on in the morning, that is. half the time we would get a third the way to where we were going when i realized i had forgotten it. and you just can't forget your tag. it's like forgetting your smile. so not ok. it just completes the outfit. you feel all sorts of naked without it. it became a part of who i am... was. who i was.
me and the tag, we went through a lot together.
like a lot a lot

the good and the bad
our heart got ripped out and stomped on by Fred.
we rejoiced at the life changing miracle of Dantae
we spent hours in the pouring summer rain
and freezing our little bootay off in the dead of the winter

and freezing our little bootay off in the dead of the winter
the baby slobber and the dirty little hands
the friend chicken and really really bad greens

it didn't even complain when little drops of sweat fell down upon it
it was good to me. so dang good.
I heard horror stories of having to take it off. i had plans on how i was going to get to keep it on, but when the time came my dear mother mentioned something about wanting to wear one. so i took it off and put it on her and went to bed.

and i didn't even miss it. i mean, i checked to make sure it was on a couple of times in the last week, but it was a whole lot more emotionless than anticipated.

but today, today i'm missing it.
i checked probably 7 times to make sure it was there.
and it never was
i went to take a redbox back and decided to take a jaunt through the store by myself to see what they had going on. A lady with a bunch of little wee ones looked at me weird. the look at you in the face, down at what youre wearing, over to your nametag, quickly look away and act like you didn't see anything. a pretty common phenomenon in the world of a missionary. the following went through my mind:
why is she staring at me like that? why are all the little kids staring at me like that? oh yeah, i'm a missionary. everyone stares. wait, did i remember my nametag? *feels for tag* craaaaaaaaaaap. not a missionary... why is she still staring at me like that?
I must just have been extra hot today in my overly wrinkled pants from being stuffed in a suitcase and flown across the country.

would it be complete blaspheme to put it back on?
you know, i'm not even sure what my mother did with it.

No- your normal -- if you want I can wear mine and we can knock on a few doors. Every member a missionary --right?!?!
It took me a long time to get used to not having it on -- now it sits on my bookcase in the office. I still have the urge to put it on every once in awhile and it's been 12 years.
I love you.
